When you do visit the the facilities, you should look for signs of abuse or neglect. First, look for signs of physical abuse. This usually can be seen when there is a disregard for some of the basic necessities of day-to-day living. Next, look out for medical neglect. Make sure that your loved one is getting the care for their existing medical problems. Look for bed sores or any malnutrition and dehydration issues.

The next thing to check is the personal hygiene of the nursing home resident. Make sure that they are living in sanitary and clean conditions and that their provisions of food, shelter, and clothing are being taken care of. Also check the person for any infections and make sure to talk to them about their stay in the facility. If you see a large personality change, for example if you see that they are always drowsy or more forgetful, and the nursing home staff might be overly medicating your loved one because they are easier to deal with if they are constantly sleeping. On the opposite side of the spectrum of overmedicating is failing to give prescribed medication. We have handled cases where the person administering pain medication does not give them to the patient and uses them to feed their own habit. If your loved one seems like they are chronically in pain, it may be a sign that this is occurring.
